It's astonishing to some that I write emails about It's astonishing to some that I write emails about things like dead toenails and the mouse in my kitchen. I get it. I was the same way for a good long while. My mom is from Wilmington, NC, which is among the most suh-thunn of southern towns. She tried her level best to raise me right... To have that certain sensibility about me, to wear monograms and conduct myself just so and look "put together" and stop being such a wall flower and wear some lipstick please and generally move myself about the world with grace and dignity. To present myself favorably, always. But it didn't work. I never got the hang of it. Back then, I was just awkward. Now I don't care. I've let go of the shame that comes with being attached to the way people perceive me. Even the people closest to me. I am no longer interested in pretending, about anything, for any reason. So if I want to tell you about the mouse in my kitchen because it is the primary preoccupation of my endless nights, well... I'm gonna do it. It's real. It's authentic. Is it brave? Sure, ok. But here's the thing... It's also strategic. Because while I may be socially inept (bless my heart), I'm no dink. And I know that there's no one else talking to you about their kitchen mouse (the horror). So I'm gonna stand out. You'll remember me. You'll admire me or be repulsed by me -- either one is fine. And maybe you'll look forward to whatever shenanigans tomorrow's email holds. That's what I'm going for. Because if you look forward to my next email, you'll read it. And if you read, maybe you'll buy whatever I offer you that day. If not, maybe you''ll reply to me. (I love your replies!) All these things are endgame if you email. Physical, not digital. Old, not new. Repair, not replace. It’s the opposite of what today is for so many of my friends and colleagues — and me. I’ve got a Black Friday promotion too, for an email workshop. But it feels good to do this work, after so much of the other work. And tomorrow I’ll use this story to write another email to my list, and sell another few workshops, and put food on the table for my kids, and help some other business owners put food on theirs.
